Call: "RE: what you saw last night" is a call to respond to the art in the world around you. The history of any writing movement is involved with the conversation it has with other art and previous movements; we are looking for writing that engages directly in this conversation. Our current time involves a heightened consumption and cultural awareness of art. We’re looking for writing that blurs the boundaries between narrative and review, poetry and critique; language that uses form to illuminate deeper meaning related to another story, beauty, or performance. We’re interested in a broad definition of ekphrasis including any work that is in response to. We have been inspired by and are interested in further cultivating work that both fits the traditional framework of ekphrasis in response to traditional art, and also more expansive versions of the form that stretch the definition. While we welcome writing in response to paintings, drawings, etc., we are particularly interested in work that broadens the definition of ekphrasis and responds to things like video, music, games, concerts, tv shows, a raccoon that crossed your path in the shadow of a street-light last evening.
